In 1846, the Keying, a Chinese junk purchased by a group of British investors who smuggled it to Hong Kong, was refitted then set sail from Hong Kong for London. The idea was to sail to London and exhibit ship, crew and exotica for payment. Named after the Chinese Imperial Commissioner who had signed away Hong Kong to the British, it was manned by a Chinese and European crew. It carried a travelling exhibition of Chinese items, a ‘mandarin’, a ship’s artist and a theatrical troupe.
