What is the Lantern Festival? It is a festival celebrated on the last day of Chinese New Year which can be traced back to more than 2,000 years ago. It is quite an important festival to the Chinese as it is the first night to see a full moon after the Spring Festival.
On this very special day, people gather to watch or carry lanterns and eat the must-eat food – glutinous rice ball. Why is it a must it? It is because glutinous rice ball, “tang yuan” in mandarin sounds like “togetherness”.
Another interesting activity on this day is guessing lantern riddles. Back in the day, people wrote riddles and pasted on lanterns, then visitors who think that they have the right answers can pull it off and check the answers with the lantern owners. If they were right, a small gift will be given.
Children are probably the ones who loves the Lantern Festival most! Because they get to carry lanterns that now, comes in different shapes and colours. You can even find Spongebob lanterns!
