2014 is soon coming to an end which means Christmas is just around the corner. At the same time, one Chinese festival that is approaching is the Dong Zhi festival.
“Dong” means winter and “zhi” means arrival, and together it means the arrival of winter. It is the shortest day of the year and has a significant meaning to the Chinese culture. It also mean that everyone turn a year older on this day.
On this very special day, families will get together and eat glutinous rice balls, a type of dessert. There is a variety from sizes and with or without fillings from peanuts, red beans to black sesame.
Dong Zhi isn’t an official holiday but the Chinese nowadays still try to make an effort to celebrate this day today.
